“Blood Lake” in Texas. Water levels in the reservoir receded, which, mixed with the warm weather, helped lower oxygen levels. The low oxygen levels prompted a fish kill and spurred the growth of bacteria called Chromatiaceae, which thrive in such conditions. Chromatiaceae are purplish in color, prompting the “blood” red colors.

Red tide at Imperial Beach. Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon also known as an algal bloom, in which large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms, such as phytoplankton, accumulate rapidly in the water, causing discoloration at the surface.

Potholes of Gold (by mojo2u)
This photo was taken in an area of La Jolla called Hospitals Reef. Its a sandstone reef that has some interesting features commonly referred to as potholes. The potholes are usually filled with water by waves or rain. The gold reflections I captured are from sunset clouds overhead.
